  • Full-time employees, their spouses, and eligible dependent children may receive tuition benefits beginning with the first enrollment period following the employee's hire date.

Dependent children become eligible after completing the 11th grade.

For complete eligibility requirements and additional information, review the Tuition Benefit Policy.

  • To apply for tuition benefits, complete the Tuition Benefits Waiver webform. The request will be reviewed to verify eligibility before tuition is applied to the student's account.

  • BYU–Hawaii follows the tuition due dates and waiver deadlines established by BYU, BYU-Idaho, and BYU–Hawaii.

    • BYU and BYU-Idaho: Tuition waiver requests are typically sent at the end of each week, beginning several weeks before the tuition due date.
    • BYU–Hawaii: Tuition waivers are typically processed after the add/drop deadline. This allows HR to confirm the employee's or dependent's final number of enrolled credits and apply the correct tuition waiver amount.

Once the tuition waiver has been processed, a notification will be sent to the employee or sponsor confirming completion.

Employee Relations

  • Managers should follow the Progressive Discipline policy when addressing employee performance or conduct concerns.

For student employees, managers must complete the Human Resources Incident Report and send a copy to Employee Relations for documentation.

  • Employees are encouraged to first seek an informal resolution by discussing the concern with their direct supervisor. Human Resources may provide information and assistance during the informal resolution process.

If the concern cannot be resolved informally, employees may file a formal grievance by reviewing the Employee Grievance policy and following the steps outlined in the policy.

  • To report a concern, misconduct, or policy violation, visit Report a Concern. Select the type of concern you would like to report and follow the instructions provided.

  • Employees may report concerns by using the Report a Concern button on the BYU–Hawaii website or by scheduling an appointment with one of the following:

  • Before terminating an employee for cause, review the Progressive Discipline policy and follow the procedures outlined in the policy.

After reviewing the policy, contact the Employee Relations Manager before proceeding with the termination. Employee Relations can provide guidance and help ensure that the appropriate procedures have been followed.

  • Policies and procedures are available on the HR website under Policies and Procedures. Select the appropriate policy category to locate the policy you need.

    During the semester:

    • Student employees may work a maximum of 19 hours per week.
    • The 19-hour limit applies to the first and last weeks of the semester, even when the semester begins or ends in the middle of a work week.

    During scheduled breaks:

    • Winter Break: Student employees may work up to 40 hours per week for three weeks. If the break lasts four weeks, the 40/40/40/19 schedule applies.

    • Summer Break: Student employees must follow the 40/40/40/19 schedule.

  • Yes. The department is responsible for the employer's cost of medical coverage when a student employee becomes eligible for HPH after meeting the applicable eligibility requirements, including working at least 20 hours per week for four consecutive weeks.

  • A student employee's ability to waive Hawaiʻi Prepaid Health Care (HPH) coverage depends on applicable state law and the university's benefits procedures. Enrollment in another health insurance plan, including the university's student health insurance plan, does not automatically qualify a student employee for an exemption.

Students should contact Human Resources for guidance on eligibility, available exemptions, and any required documentation before waiving coverage.
