Vacations During Quarantine Restrictions

The University acknowledges and is grateful for the resiliency of the employees who have done their best to be productive while working from home during the stay-at-home order. Essential workers have likewise been valiant to continue to produce under less than ideal conditions. As vacation season approaches, we wish to remind employees of the leave policy to aid in planning.

During the government’s quarantine restriction, all employees who leave Hawaii for vacation are required to quarantine according to governmental guidelines unless they receive an essential worker exemption from the state. This exemption may not be self-defined. Therefore, all employees who choose to leave the island must use sick leave or vacation hours during their quarantine period unless they were able to work from home prior to leaving and may continue to productively work from home during their quarantine period. Those with insufficient sick or vacation leave hours will incur leave without pay. Additionally, please remember that no more than 176 vacation hours will be allowed to carry-over into the next year; anything in excess of this amount will be forfeited.
