Student Employment Guidelines

Current Announcement

* The Student Employment office is open Monday through Friday, except holidays, from 9AM to 4PM. You may also reach us directly at (808) 675-4710 or (808) 675-3749.

* The yellow Student Hire Certification cards are back! Effective August 27, 2018, the yellow card is required to present to departments prior to starting employment. In addition to the Workay notification received by both managers and student employees, on-campus student employees must also present the yellow Student Hire Certification card to their managers as confirmation that they have completed all hiring requirements and have been cleared by the Student Employment office.

* Managers and Supervisors: Do not allow new student hires or rehires to begin work until they present you with the yellow card.

* Important employment dates for Spring 2019 semester (May 1, 2019- June 28, 2019):

Likewise, students who will discontinue enrollment after Spring semester will no longer eligible for student employment; last day of employment is June 28, 2019

One-Location Employment

All BYU-H students, including those registered on approved semester leave, may work at only 1 location: PCC or BYU-H.

Work Hours


All actively enrolled students, both domestic and international, employed on-campus may work a maximum of 19 hours per week even if the start or end of the semester falls midweek.

One-week break between semesters

All actively enrolled students, both domestic and international, may work up to 40 hours during the one-week break between semesters.

Summer break

Summer employment is contingent upon active enrollment in Spring and Fall semesters. During the 9-week break, these student employees may work up to 40 hours per week, with exception of the fourth week, which must be 19 hours.

Employment during Approved Semester Leave

Students on approved semester leave may work up to 40 hours per week for three consecutive weeks but must decrease to 19 hours on the fourth week. Domestic students on approved semester leave are subject to FICA.

Please note that students must apply and be approved for semester leave in order to continue employment in their student positions. To apply for semester leave, students must meet with their Academic Advisor or visit the Registrar's office to complete the required form.

New & Returning Students

New and returning students may work 3 weeks prior to the start of the semester they are admitted.


FICA (Social Security and Medicare taxes:

Exempt from FICA

To qualify for FICA exemption, domestic students must be enrolled in 6 credits or more during Fall and Winter semesters. They must be enrolled in 8 credits in Spring semester to be exempt from FICA.

All international students are FICA exempt. They must be enrolled with full-time credits.

Subject to FICA

Domestic students who are enrolled in less than 6 credits, approved semester leave, and working through the 9-week summer break.
