For International Students Only
BYU-Hawaii International Student Work Policy
According to the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, volume 8, Aliens and Nationality, revised January 1, 1998:
Employment…must not exceed twenty hours a week while school is in session. [8 CFR 214.2(f)(9)(I)]
Any violation of this policy, by any amount of time, will result in immediate termination. At that point, you will be out of status and ineligible to work unless and until cleared by the International Student Office.
BYU-Hawaii Student Employment Services monitors work hours for international students on a weekly basis. The workweek begins Sunday morning and ends Saturday night. You are allowed to work up to 19 hours during this time. The first time you exceed 19 hours during fall or winter semester, you will be terminated from your employment and referred to the International office.
To avoid working more than 19 hours during the week, we recommend the following:
- Work 19 hours only each week.
- Check your hours on KRONOS each Thursday before your shift begins. This will let you know how many hours you have available for the rest of the week (Thursday and Friday). This will also ensure that you do not exceed 19 hours for the week. Follow these steps to check your hours on KRONOS.
On your home clock (find out from your supervisor where your home clock is if you don’t know):
- Press F7
- Wait for the screen to display “badge”
- Press * and type in badge number or swipe ID card
- Press enter.
International students may work up to 8 hours a day during semester/term breaks, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and summer terms.
An F-1 student may, however, work on campus full-time when school is not in session or during the annual vacation. [8 CFR 214.2(f)(9)(I)].
Certification To Determine Eligibility
to Work (I-9)
All students that are hired by BYU-Hawaii or the Polynesian Culture Center
are required to satisfy federal law which mandates that the Student Employment
Office certify each individual's eligibility to work. View
the list of acceptable documents to prove eligibility to work. Acceptable
documents that prove eligibility must be original. Copies of any kind are not
acceptable. So be sure to bring these documents with you to avoid unnecessary
and possibly costly delays.
