Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Its my first
time enrolling for insurance, what do I need to do?
A1: There are two ways you can enroll. You may enroll online through
our website, or stop by the Lorenzo Snow Building (LSB 136) and ask for Student
Insurance. You are responsible to pay for your coverage by the first day of class. Failure to do so will result in an automatic drop of your classes.
Q2: I have private insurance and
wish to switch to student insurance, where do I go to get this done?
A2: You will need to go to the
Student Insurance Office at LSB 136 and fill out an enrollment
form. You must also show a letter of termination from your previous
insurance carrier, and provide proof that you were covered for
six consecutive months prior to enrolling at BYUH in order for
us to enroll you on the student health plan.
Q3: Does the insurance cover dental?
A3: This student health plan
ONLY covers medical, no dental. However, there is a very affordable
dental plan offered by the Hawaii Family Dental Centers. It
is called the University Student Dental Plan. Ask for more information
on this plan when you sign up for student insurance.
Q4: I am a new international student
and I want to apply for maternity coverage. Will I qualify?
A4: You may be eligible for maternity
coverage ONLY IF you provide proof that you had US based insurance
coverage six months prior to your acceptance to BYU Hawaii.
Q5: If I decide to return home
for the summer, can I be covered away from campus?
A5: Yes, and you must come into
our office and fill out an "away from campus" coverage
form. We will need you to pay for your away from campus coverage
the day you sign up. Failure to do so will result in our denial
of your request for coverage.
Q6: What does "Annual Enrollment"
mean?
A6: Annual Enrollment means that
once you enroll for a semester, you will be automatically enrolled
throughout the entire academic year as long as you are a full
time student during each semester/term. You are responsible
for paying the premiums by the beginning of each semester or
classes will be dropped.
Q7: I will be doing my internship
this semester, do I still need the Student Insurance?
A7: As long as you are doing
internship for CREDIT, you are required to have student insurance.
The reason for this is because, when you doing internship to
earn university credits, the university is responsible for you.
We will automatically bill your account with the appropriate
insurance premium if we see that you are on a "credited"
internship. If you are an IWES Student, you are required to
carry the student plan regardless if your internship is for credit
or not.
Q8: I was charged insurance last
summer, but I was not in school. Is it possible to get those charges reversed?
A8: We have deadlines for coverage
termination. If you did not come to us to reconcile the charges
before the deadline, we will not reimburse you. Because of the
annual enrollment, we automatically charged you for summer.
If you wait till the end of summer to contact us, we will not
consider your request.
Q9: As a sponsored student, do I
have to be under the student health plan?
A9: As a sponsored student, you
are required to have the student health plan that we offer.
If you claim to have private insurance, your sponsorship status
will be evaluated.
Q10: I just got married, do I need
to let you know?
A10: Yes, you must let us know
as soon as possible when your status changes from single to
married so we can update your status. Also, please note that
the premiums for single and married students are different and
your account will be charged the adjustment.
Q11: My wife is a dependent on
my plan, but now she's pregnant, will the insurance cover her maternity?
A11: If you originally applied
for the family plan with maternity coverage (High Option), then
the insurance will cover her maternity visits. However, if you
had applied for the low option, non-maternity coverage in the
beginning, insurance will not pick up her maternity claims.
Q12: I just gave birth, is my baby
automatically enrolled in the plan?
A12: Your baby is covered for
the first 30 days. You will have up to these 30 days to put
your baby in our plan or in another plan. If you decide to add
him to our plan, please let us know before the end of the thirty
days.
Q13: I'm graduating and wish to
keep the student insurance, what will I need to do to hold on to my coverage?
A13: You must let us know 3
weeks before graduation that you wish to remain on the plan.
We will then put you on the "extended plan" coverage.
You will be covered monthly. For more information, please contact
us.
Q14: I wish to terminate my insurance
because I am graduating/leaving/withdrawing from BYUH. Where do I terminate my insurance?
A14: To terminate your student insurance, please come to our office at LSB 136 to fill out
a termination form.
